Semester: Sommersemester 2015

3.02.180 S Descriptive Linguistics: Data, Models and English Grammar

Veranstaltungstermin

  • Dienstag: 16:00 - 18:00, wöchentlich

Beschreibung

The focus of the seminar will be areas of English grammar such as the tense system, determiner use or question-formation. We will first familiarize ourselves with English grammars and compare “linguistic” and “school” grammars.
Questions we will ask are: What is the aim of prescriptive school grammars? Are they accurate? Are “linguistic”, descriptive grammars accurate? What does “accuracy” mean in this context? What can linguistic models add to our understanding of language?
In order to answer these questions, naturalistic data will be collected, analyzed and matched with the grammatical descriptions or with linguistic research articles.

Requirements
Active participation is required and will be negotiated. Reading the respective literature or preparing data for the sessions is an integral part of the course.

Preparation:
Reread the reader of the BM “Introduction to Linguistics and the English Language”.
