Beschreibung

"History clings tight, but it also kicks loose." (Simon Schama)

This course provides an insight into contemporary British and Irish culture, society and politics, with reference to the long and bloody history of the Union, attempting to situate contemporary debates in their historical contexts. For example: If they are both part of the United Kingdom, why are university fees so much higher in England than in Scotland? How can it be that the nation which sentenced its king to death as early as 1649 is a monarchy? Why is it still illegal for the reigning monarch to be Catholic? Did the 2014 Referendum bring an end to the debate about Scottish independence that started in 1707? What is happening to the National Health Service and other public services? Might the UK leave the European Union in 2017 (Brexit)?

The "Academic Speaking and Writing" courses make up the second part of ang080. These are practical courses geared toward teaching you how to give effective presentations in an academic setting, as well as introducing the culture, language and society of different Anglophone countries. In the course you will be expected to complete regular language assignments, write an academic text, prepare and give a short presentation, and prepare and take part in a group discussion. As with "Introduction to Integrated Language Skills", the course is graded on a pass-fail basis.
