The Leibniz Centre for Tropical Marine Research (ZMT) and the Institute for Chemistry and Biology of the Marine Environment (ICBM) at the School of Mathematics and Natural Sciences invites applications for a joint professor position (W2) in
commencing as soon as possible.
The Leibniz Centre for Tropical Marine Research (www.leibniz-zmt.de) is dedicated to the study of tropical marine ecosystems and their services to human societies. It is designed as a genuinely trans- and interdisciplinary institute, within which social and natural science approaches are integrated. The centre runs a marine experimental facility to conduct ecophysiological experiments in a simulated tropical marine environment as well as chemical, biological, and sedimentological laboratories. The ZMT is a member of the Leibniz Association.
The Institute for Chemistry and Biology of the Marine Environment (www.icbm.de) at the University of Oldenburg is a major university institute with 18 research groups. It is the only marine research institute in the state of Lower Saxony and located in Oldenburg and Wilhelmshaven. The institute has a field station on the island of Spiekeroog, and it hosts Germany's second largest research vessel, the "Sonne". ICBM is focused on cutting-edge, interdisciplinary marine research with particular strengths in chemistry (geochemistry, biogeochemistry), biology (microbiology, planktology) and physics / modeling.
Tropical coastal ecosystems are highly productive habitats with increasing ecological and economic importance. Driven by rapid societal change, the anthropogenic pressure on these ecosystems and their resources steadily increases. A strong synthesis of ecological and socio-economic approaches should be the basic concept of the research group. ZMT is a forerunner in interdisciplinary research between natural and social scientists.
Scientists from research fields including ecology, fisheries biology, and related areas are invited to apply. The candidates need to be renowned for their scientific expertise in physiology, ecology and biology. We are seeking a person who collaborates interdisciplinarily, and who, besides having solid knowledge in taxonomy and the methods of fishery biological research, also has knowledge in modern laboratory methods such as isotope and biochemical analyses. Due to the specific mission of ZMT, the candidate is expected to have research experience in marine coastal ecosystems, as well as experience in field work preferably in tropical areas and research contacts in these regions. The willingness and dedication to work abroad in the field in the tropics together with our partners is a prerequisite for the appointment. The successful candidate establishes a working group within the ZMT department of ecology. Proficiency in English is mandatory. We expect the successful candidate to acquire German language skills within two years.
Candidates need to connect to the research of the working groups of ZMT, ICBM and the Helmholtz Institute for Functional Marine Biodiversity at the University of Oldenburg (HIFMB). They need to have experience and potential in the acquisition of third party funded projects. Experience for teaching in the field of marine science/marine ecology is also required since the position entails a teaching commitment at the University of Oldenburg as well as within the capacity building activities of ZMT.
Preconditions for employment are specified in § 25 NHG. In order to increase the percentage of female staff members, female applicants are to be preferentially considered in case of equal qualification. Applicants with disabilities will be preferentially considered in case of equal qualification.
Applications, including a curriculum vitae, qualifying documentation (final academic records, list of publications, evidence of external funding, teaching experience, prizes), a research plan as well as a teaching plan should be submitted by email in a single PDF-file to email@example.com. Closing date is 26/04/2018.
Universitätseigene Stellenausschreibungen werden ausschließlich erst nach Bestätigung durch die/den jeweilige(n) PersonalsachbearbeiterIn des Dezernates 1 und anschließender Weiterleitung hierher aufgenommen.
