Steering ultrafast processes in artificial photosynthesis

Being able to steer electron transfer processes is of crucial importance in the realization of efficient molecular photovoltaics and photocatalysts. Key parameters are the directionality of the electron transfer process, the ultrafast dynamics involved and the occurrence of long-lived charge separation. These processes can be monitored in real-time using ultrafast spectroscopy. In this presentation I will show that the nanomorphology of the complex plays a central role. Minor modifications in the molecular structure are capable of suppressing undesirable charge recombination processes from picosecond to sub-microsecond time scales. This impressive effect highlights the importance of understanding the interplay between nanomorphology and electron transfer dynamics.
