Current Position

I am acting professor for educational science with a focus on school pedagogy at the University of Oldenburg. In 2016, I completed my habiliation and was granted the Venia Legendi for educational sciences (Bildungswissenschaften) by the department of education at the University of Oldenburg.

Research Interests

My research is situated between mainstream educational sciences and language education. Over the past years, my research looked at the psychology of language learning and teaching, specifically motivational aspects and identity issues in the development of language competencies. Furthermore, I am  interested in content and language integrated learning, language across the curriculum and the general role of feedback in teaching and learning. My current research focuses on stimulating intercultural competence in students and teachers.

Background

At the University of Oldenburg, I teach BA and MA students studying towards a teaching degree.

My seminars cover a wide range of topics dealing with different aspects of learning and teaching including motivational theories, approaches to addressing linguistic and cultural diversity in the classroom and research methodology. I am also holding lecture series and seminars on the history and development of the German educational system where a special focus is placed on contemporary issues of equity.

Before coming to Oldenburg, I was a research associate at the Donostia Research Group on Education and Multilingualism at the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU), San Sebastian, Spain. While in Spain, I also worked on a British Council project dealing with identity in foreign language learning and teaching. I hold a PhD in Educational Science from the University of Oxford, England, where I graduated with a thesis titled "Foreign Language Learning Motivation in Higher Education: A Longitudinal Study on Motivational Changes and their Causes".

Before embarking on my doctoral project, I obtained a postgraduate diploma in learning and teaching in higher education and became a fellow of the English higher education academy in 2008. During my time at Oxford, I also worked for the German Academic Exchange Service as a DAAD-Lektor at Oxford's German department for four years, where I was awarded the Oxford University Teaching Award in 2008. I have more than 16 years' teaching experience in EFL (English as a foreign language) and GFL (German as a foreign language) in several countries such as Australia, England, Germany, Namibia and Spain. Finally, I am a qualified teacher for secondary schools in Germany (Staatsexamen I & IISek I & II, English and German) and have conducted various in-service courses and workshops on motivation for language teachers. That is to say, I not only theorise, I also have first-hand experience with a variety of students and with teacher training.
