Computing Science (Dual-Subject Bachelor's Programme)
Within the scope of the Dual-subject Bachelor, you can take Computing Science
- as a primary or secondary dual subject (60 ECTS) or
- as a Minor (30 ECTS) combined with a Major
Computing Science can be studied either in connection with a non-school related career goal or as a professional teaching qualification. If you want to become a teacher, you must follow the combinations of subjects (in German) for each teaching position.
Orientation and Goals
All of these applications require the automated processing of information, which forms the basis of the scientific discipline 'Computing Science'.
Prospective students should possess the basic skills required for computing science, such as the ability to responsibly handle information, an understanding for constructive progress as well as corresponding problem solving methods, and the ability to acquire required algorithmic and linguistic skills. Because Computing Science has become an essential part of many fields of knowledge, it has become firmly established in school curricula, and it is increasing in importance.
This subject should teach pupils basic approaches to computing science and put them in a position to apply the methods and principles of the subject in concrete situations.
The key to adequately implementing this subject in schools is the training of qualified teaching staff. The dual-subject bachelor's degree described here offers students a basic qualification that will later enable them to work in school teaching, among other fields. Qualifying as a teacher of computing science in schools offers many opportunities, as there will be a significant demand for teachers in this field in coming years. In addition to this dual-subject bachelor's programme, which prepares graduates for a career in school teaching, students at the University of Oldenburg may also opt for a degree programme in Computing Science (potentially with an applied subject) or Business IT.
These bachelor's and master's programmes are distinguished by their heightened technical orientation (see corresponding information materials).
Foreign Language Skills
German Language Proficiency
You can proof your German language proficiency with the following language certificates:
- DSH: Deutsche Sprachprüfung für den Hochschulzugang (Level 2)
- TestDaF: Test – Deutsch als Fremdsprache (with level 4 in all four areas)
The proof of language proficiency must be presented for the enrolment. For other proof possiblities see: Language requirements
Careers and Areas of Employment
This degree programme, which is worth 90 credit points, can be combined with an applied subject (30 credit points), and prepares students for careers outside of the teaching field, as well as for further study in related master's programmes.
Students who intend to become teachers can choose Computing Science as a 60 credit point subject, leading to a Master of Education (for the Gymnasium), or otherwise study Computing Science as a 30 credit point subject, leading to a Master of Education for vocational schools/teaching business education.
Entry to the teaching service usually requires the completion of a Master of Education programme (and a period of teaching practice).
Furthermore, there are also other interesting opportunities for direct entry to the private sector after graduation. These include education-related positions in publishing or in non-school educational facilities. Keep in mind that a 30 credit point degree component only covers the basics of the subject area, and that further study is needed. Even the 60 credit point degree component does not provide a complete knowledge of the whole field of Computing Science.
If students are interested in a non-school-related goal, more information can be found at the professional field of Computing Science (in German).
