Research interests

Motor Imagery is a common approach in the acquisition or the improvement of motor skills in healthy individuals e.g. in music or sports, but also to supplement rehabilitation interventions of motor impairments following stroke. Several recent studies have indicated motor improvement at different levels after motor imagery training, especially in combination with online neurofeedback, but the underlying mechanisms or the influence of internal and external parameters remain rather unclear.

Therefore, the aim of my PhD project is to investigate some of these hallmarks such as interference or sleep using high-density Electroencephalography (EEG) in the lab as well as mobile, wireless EEG systems in daily-life environments. Aside from the neuroimaging, we will also explore sensor controlled motion tracking, peripheral physiological measures and psychology-based (learning) models to contribute to a comprehensive picture of motor imagery mechanisms. Furthermore, we will also consider interdisciplinary concepts and methods e.g. in digital signal processing, data visualization techniques and machine learning to achieve this goal. The project is funded by the DFG: http://gepris.dfg.de/gepris/projekt/322071030

From my Master’s thesis, I retain a vivid interest in neural speech decoding methodologies with a special emphasis on the influence of additional visual input to continuous speech in adverse listening situations.
