Information Technology in Environmental Engineering

Sustainable Material Life Cycles – Is Wind Energy Really Sustainable?

Renewable energies, for example wind energy, are regarded as sustainable energies. A conference at the Hanse-Wissenschaftskolleg (Institute for Advanced Study, HWK) in June, 2012, raised the question whether this is really the case: “Sustainable Material Life Cycles – Is Wind Energy Really Sustainable?”. The conference addressed all materials involved throughout a full life cycle of a wind turbine.

Stimulating presentations and lively discussions characterized all sessions. Soft Computing for Business Intelligence

The book Soft Computing for Business Intelligence is the remarkable output of a program based on the idea of joint trans-disciplinary research as supported by the Eureka Iberoamerica Network and the University of Oldenburg.

It contains twenty-seven papers allocated to three sections: Soft Computing, Business Intelligence and Knowledge Discovery, and Knowledge Management and Decision Making. Engineering and Management of IT-based Service Systems

Intelligent Decision-Making Support Systems (i-DMSS) are specialized IT-based systems that support some or several phases of the individual, team, organizational or inter-organizational decision making process by deploying some or several intelligent mechanisms. This book pursues the following academic aims:

  1. generate a compendium of quality theoretical and applied contributions in Intelligent Decision-Making Support Systems (i-DMSS) for engineering and management IT-based service systems (ITSS)
  2. diffuse scarce knowledge about foundations, architectures and effective and efficient methods and strategies for successfully planning, designing, building, operating, and evaluating i-DMSS for ITSS, and
  3. create an awareness of, and a bridge between ITSS and i-DMSS academicians and practitioners in the current complex and dynamic engineering and management ITSS organizational.

The book presents a collection of 11 chapters referring to relevant topics for both IT service systems and i-DMSS including: problems of selection of IT service providers, optimization of supply chain systems, IT governance decisions, clinical decision support, dynamic user-interface adaptation, re-engineering of processes, and generic decision problems. Advanced IT technologies used in some chapters are: fuzzy multi-criteria mechanisms, semantic processing, data mining processing, and rough sets. Other chapters report traditional DSS mechanisms but used or suggested to be used in innovative mode for IT service engineering and management tasks.

Developing Sustainability

Sustainability embraces many concepts. It requires in-depth cross disciplinary knowledge and the ability to think differently and creatively about current and future development challenges. A wide range of geographical and cultural perspectives inform the research papers presented in this text. From games to governance, technology to teaching, design to decisions the dimensions of sustainability are explored.

Organizations’ Environmental Performance Indicators

The book provides a collection of individual chapters from the participants in the OEPI project, which represent a mix of academic and practical chapters and contributions. The first part of the book is dedicated to a theoretical introduction to Organisations' Environmental Performance Indicators and to a state-of-the-art overview in literature and practice. Green Computing & Sustainability

Geschäftsprozessintegration mit SAP

Anhand einer durchgängigen Fallstudie wird die Geschäftsprozessintegration mit Hilfe von SAP-Technologien erläutert. Konzeptionelle und technische Grundlagen, insbesondere die Einführung in die verwendete Integrationsplattform SAP PI und SAP Business Workflows, werden der Fallstudie vorangestellt. Die Fallstudie des Buches beschäftigt sich mit der Ermittlung der Umweltwirkung von Produkten und thematisiert damit eine Problemstellung, die im Kontext unterschiedlicher Geschäftsprozesse und Branchen auftritt: um das kundenseitige Informationsbedürfnis zur Umweltwirkung eines Produktes erfüllen zu können, werden Produktionsdetails entlang der Wertschöpfungskette von der Rohstoffentnahme bis zum Vertrieb gesammelt. Auf Grundlage der so gewonnenen Daten erhält der Verbraucher Aufschluss über die Herkunft der verarbeiteten Rohstoffe und die angewendeten Produktionsverfahren. Die erforderlichen Prozesse werden am Beispiel des produktbezogenen Carbon Footprint (PCF) konzipiert und implementiert.
