Description

This second part of the Basismodul English Linguistics gives a brief introduction to English phonetics, followed by an extensive overview of linguistic meaning (Semantics, contextual meaning (Pragmatics), and social meaning & variation (Sociolinguistics). It also gives a short overview of the history of the English language (Historical Linguistics).

The course will be accompanied by exercise sessions (which require active participation) and tutorials and will be complemented in winter by a course on phonology, morphology and syntax in the winter semester.

Evaluation:
Two in-classs written tests, one on phonetics (mid-term), the other on language &
meaning (end of term)
