Description
The popular American sitcom How I Met Your Mother humorously portrays Canadians as hockey-loving bilingual people who live among bears and moose and experience cold temperatures throughout most of the year. How many Canadians does this really describe? In this course, students will uncover what ‘being Canadian’ signifies to the diverse population of the Great White North. We will explore Canadian culture and iden- tity by examining the role of colonialism, diversity, policies and institutions, nationalism, and fears of Americanization.
The course “Discovering Canadian Culture” forms one half of the compulsory module ang080: Consolidated Language Skills. The module is assessed via a portfolio.
The “Academic Speaking and Writing” courses make up the second part of ang080. These are practical courses geared toward teaching you how to give effective presentations in an academic setting, as well as introducing the culture, language and society of different Anglophone countries. In the course you will be expected to complete regular language assignments, write an academic text, prepare and give a short presentation, and prepare and take part in a group discussion. As with “Introduction to Integrated Language Skills”, the course is graded on a pass-fail basis.
