Semester: Summer term 2017

3.02.114 Ü Written English: Music in Social Movements -

Event date(s) | room

Description

Music serves not only as a vehicle of cultural expression but also of social protest and change – whether or not individual artists intend their work to do so. This course provides instruction and practice in writing an argumentative academic essay while exploring the historical and social significance of a selection of songs, the relationship between the audience and the artist, connections between different musical genres, etc. In this process, we will learn various techniques for achieving coherence and cohesion in an essay, examine discourse functions of common grammatical structures, and survey basics of style in academic writing. As you reflect on your own work and that of others, you will develop your own writing and editing strategies as well as learn how to provide constructive feedback to other writers.

Note: The module is assessed via a portfolio and the assessment requirements consist of a take-home essay and a 90 minute written language test. The grade will be added to the result from Spoken English. Homework assignments as required by the lecturer will count towards active participation.
