Language Centre

What is a sprachtandem?

In a sprachtandem two native speakers of different languages meet on a regular basis to support each other in improving their foreign language skills.

Tandem learning follows two main principles:

  1. Mutuality: Both partners benefit equally from the meetings.
  2. Learner autonomy: Everyone is responsible for their own learning process. Each decides what and how s/he wants to learn and also respects the decision of the partner about their learning process.

A sprachtandem doesn't offer a set structure like a language course, and you progress at your own pace. You can focus on your individual needs. In communicating with a native speaker, you also learn a lot about the culture your partner grew up in.

How you structure your meetings depends on you and your goals. You may want to discuss topics of interest to improve your oral skills, you could practice grammar, read texts together or get help in preparing for an exam, to name a few options. And every meeting can be different - it's entirely up to you. If you're looking for ideas, check out the tips and a great variety of exercises for many languages in our "Links" section.

You're also welcome to come to our office hours, Wednesdays 3:00-3:30 p.m. in A5-1-138, alone or with your partner, for help or to give feedback on your progress.
