Part of the funding annually available from the Volkswagen Foundation is initially given to the federal state of Lower Saxony. This funding does not normally address individual scientific projects, but sponsors among other things measures for structural improvement of universities, technical and personal amenities for the appointment of new professors, the support of negotiations on remaining in office, the definition of scientific priorities and the creation of centres of scientific excellence. Calls and selection procedures are accompanied by the Lower Saxony’s Scientific Commission (WKN) and the Volkswagen Foundation.
