Department of East European History

The department deals with the history of Eastern Europe, notably from East Central Europe, 18th to 20th Century. A main focus in research and teaching is the history of relationships between the Germans, their eastern neighbours and different cultures of memory. Research on historical stereotypes offers a specific methodological approach, which is conceptually pursued and developed at the workplace for “Historical Research stereotypes"(AHS).

Currently the following projects are pursued at the department:

  • "Polnische Quellen zur Geschichte des Ersten Vereinigten Landtags Preußens von 1847" - "Polish sources on the history of the First United parliament of Prussia of 1847" - almost completed, in the publication phase, promoted by the DFG
  • "Deutsche-Polnische Erinnerungsorte / Polsko-Niemieckie Miejsca Pamięci", (German-Polish places of memory / Polsko-Niemi Eckie miejsca Pamięci), in cooperation with the Centre for Historical Research of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Berlin, led by Hans Henning Hahn and Robert Traba, in collaboration with Maciej Gorny and Kornelis Konczal, funded by the German-Polish European Science Foundation ESF, the Alfried Krupp von Bohlen und Halbach-Foundation, the DFG, inter alia,

  • "Das Oberschlesische Hydrierwerke AG (OHW) und das KZ-Außenlager Blechhammer (1939-45)" (The Upper Silesian Hydrierwerke AG (OHW) and the concentration subcamp Blechhammer (1939-45)), promoted by the DFG
  • "Der polnische Januaraufstand von 1863 - Verflechtungs- und Wahrnehmungsgeschichte", (The Polish January Uprising of 1863 - Entangled History and Perception), promoted by the DFG - conference project for autumn 2013

In teaching a close collaboration with the department of history of the The Federal Institute for Culture and History of the Germans in Eastern Europe (BKGE) takes place. Unter anderem wird gemeinsam die Reihe „Mitteleuropa – Osteuropa. Oldenburger Beiträge zur Kultur und Geschichte Ostmitteleuropas“ herausgegeben. In addition there is a close research collaboration with the Centre for Historical Research of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Berlin (see under projects).
