Introduction to Ecocriticism (Michaela Keck)

Ecocriticism, an academic discipline that emerged in the early 1990s, has by now reached considerable visibility. It examines literary and cultural texts regarding the ways in which humans relate to and interact with nonhuman nature, and thus seeks to re-think and re-envision the relationship and interaction between humans and the environment. In the first part of this workshop, students will actively engage with some of the central questions of ecocriticism and apply them to a variety of text selections from poetry, fiction, and nature writing:

  • How does an ecological perspective on the earth change human life?
  • What assumptions and values underpin the authors’ (re)presentations of the relationship between human and nonhuman nature?
  • What limits does an “I” vs. “thou/it” discourse put on such (re)presentations? How can these binary opposites be avoided?
  • What role does gender play?

In the second part of the workshop, students will be further introduced to some of the major concerns of environmental ethics as articulated by Aldo Leopold about the obligations of humans vis-à-vis their environment.

[The text materials will be available in the general reader.]
