Energy Research Groups

ENERiO - Energy Research in Oldenburg
ENERiO is the energy research association at the University of Oldenburg between several departments and affliated institutes. It carries out research and development on electrical energy and grid integration.
With focus on Science and Technology, ICT, Energy Meteorology and Economics. The institutions involved are the University of Oldenburg and its affiliated institutes ForWind, Next Energy and Offis.

Energy and Semiconductor Research
Basic research on Semiconductor Physics as well as R&D activities in the field of Photovoltaics and Renewable Energy. The department is part of the Institute for Physics and encompasses the working groups Energy Meteorology, Laboratory for Chalcogenide Photovoltaics (LCP), Optoelectronic Organics, Experimental Physics of Complex Systems, Nanochemistry, Physics of Interfaces, and Energy Storage.

Technical and Physical Chemistry
The Institute for Chemistry carries out energy research in two closely related directions.  In Technical and Physical Chemistry, the focus of research lies on material conversion processes in the production and conversion of fuels and energy storage materials applicable in Renewable Energy technologies (e.g. solar fuels, fuel cells, batteries). Here electrochemical processes play an important role. Catalysis is the key methodology for the development of atom-economical and energy-economical conversion of substances, which is the focal point within all research groups within the Institute for Chemistry. Central research areas are the heterogeneous and the homogenous catalytic processes that are investigated with a wide array of methodologies. Heterogeneous catalysis can be found in electro-chemical energy converters and large scale technical processes. Homogeneous catalytical processes are of interest for the efficient and energy saving production of high value compounds and materials otherwise only accessible with large input of energy and educt material.

The Center for Wind Energy Research of the Universities of Oldenburg, Bremen and Hannover links scientific know-how with industry relevant research areas. ForWind bundles and manages the activities of the three partnering universities and acts as a high level expertise contact partner for the industry. Members in ForWind from the University of Oldenburg within the Institute of Physics  are the research groups

Within the Department of Computer Science  research groups

are also members in ForWind.

NEXT ENERGY – Research for smart cities & smart regions
The EWE research center is activ in application-oriented research in the areas of Photovoltaics, Fuel Cells and Energy Storage Systems, and addresses questions of strategic importance for the energy systems of the year 2050.

OFFIS - Institute for Information Technology
OFFIS is active in R&D of IT solutions in the areas of energy, health and traffic. The division of the Energy's ICT-Research and -Development is classified in the following R&D-Groups:

  • System Analysis and Distributed Optimization
  • Architecture Engineering and Interoperability
  • Smart Resource Integration
  • Simulation and Automation of Complex Energy Systems


The research centre COAST unites activities in the field of sustainability sciences, linking natural and social sciences, economics, computing sciences and renewable energies focussing on the connection between societies and the environment in coastal areas. COAST fosters interdisciplinary research projects of the involved research institutes and supports the involvement of external partners; it combines teaching activities of sustainability-related Master's degree programmes and offers a joint professionalization phase in the Bachelor's degree.

The Center for Sustainable Spatial Development bundels research and teaching competences in spatial and regional development together with research in sustainability. The center is interlinking research groups from natural sciencs, economics, and social and poltical science addressing an interdisciplinary approach to sustainability. The Center for Sustainable Spatial Development is in close cooperation with COAST.
