TrinkWave: Operation strategies and technologies for water reuse to support drinking water supply in urban areas
The research project TrinkWave, raised by the BMBF, aims to develop a new, innovative multi-barrier treatment concept for indirect potable water reuse based on sequential managed aquifer recharge technology (SMART). This study will develop a high-rate water treatment systems that utilizes modified engineered natural treatment systems including multiple barriers delivering a water quality that is suitable for drinking water augmentation while offering a high degree of groundwater protection. New and comprehensive approaches and criteria for potable reuse schemes will be developed and adopted to conditions in Europe. These include new concepts of performance monitoring (indicator/surrogate concepts) and tailored water reuse safety plans. In addition to existing frameworks, these concepts will comprehensively consider emerging water quality issues, including viruses, antibiotic resistances, trace organic chemicals and transformation products and their assessment towards protection of human health. In addition, the project will identify novel biomolecular parameters to assess the performance of biofilm-based treatment systems and will develop appropriate concepts for risk communication. Key outcomes of TrinkWave include recommendations for regulatory agencies, utilities and engineering consultants.
