The Medical Physics Group at the Department of Medical Physics and Acoustics, University of Oldenburg, Germany, seeks a motivated
PhD student (75 % of full time TV-L 13 position, 3 years)
in the field of auditory-object-based perception modelling for complex scenes
This project conducts research towards a better understanding of auditory perception in complex, realistic listening scenarios. The goal is to develop a generalized model for auditory perception, including aspects of psychoacoustic masking, speech quality, and (spatial) audio quality, taking into account a perceptual decomposition of a complex scene into auditory objects. The final model should provide a tool for instrumental prediction of audio quality and auditory perception applicable in research and development in the areas of (binaural) hearing devices and virtual, mixed, and augmented acoustic reality. The applicant will 1) design and perform psychoacoustic experiments with headphones and in a three-dimensional loudspeaker array, 2) extent a computational auditory model in MATLAB, 3) publish in English-language scientific journals and present at international conferences.
The project is funded by the newly established DFG collaborative research centre CRC1330 Hearing Acoustics, which aims at a better understanding of human acoustic communication and is a long-term collaboration of researchers from Oldenburg, Aachen and Munich. Applicants for the position must hold an academic university degree (master or equivalent) in physics, hearing technology & audiology, engineering, or a related discipline. Applicants should have solid knowledge in at least one of the following fields: psychoacoustics, computational auditory models, (spatial) audio quality, acoustics, speech perception and quality, or speech and audio signal processing. A strong interest in interdisciplinary application-oriented work, familiarity with scientific tools and programming languages such as MATLAB, and good spoken and written English language skills are expected. Furthermore, candidates should have at least some basic German language skills or should acquire them during the first 6 months.
