Chemistry - Master's Programme

Orientation and Goals

The master's programme in chemistry prepares students to shape innovations in their professional life through the application of chemical knowledge and scientific methods, and using the results for the good of society. The programme is oriented towards research. Students acquire the methodological and analytical skills needed for developing suitable solutions for complex problems.

All modules are optional compulsory modules. By selection of the modules, students can either continue a broad preparation in chemistry on an advanced level or set a topical focus on molecular chemistry or on the chemistry at interfaces (catalysis, electrochemistry, photochemistry).

Study Design and Contents

Depending on the selection of modules, the master programme teaches the advanced knowledge and research methodology in the working direction available in the Institute of Chemistry. They comprise

  • organic, metalorganic and inorganic molecular chemistry (synthesis, analytical methods, aspects of chemical bonding, reaction mechanism and their application in homogeneous catalysis, sustainable chemistry and materials chemistry)
  • heterogeneous reactions in the catalysis at surfaces, electrochemistry and photochemistry (e.g., elemental reactions and quantum chemistry of surfaces and adsorbates, preparation of surfaces, porous electrodes and catalysts, characterization of surface structures, applications in catalytic reactions, fuel cells, electrolysers, batteries, solar-driven energy converters, sensors and 3D material printing).

Further areas of specialised competences can be acquired in cooperation with the neighbouring institutes, for instance in the field of environmental analytical chemistry, circular economy and informatics.

The programme comprises

  • Modules with lectures, classroom exercises, excursions, research laboratory courses including an optional semester abroad with a total workload of 90 CP
  • Master thesis (30 CP)

Details can be found in the course table.

Teaching and Learning

From each of the Divisions of the Institute of Chemistry, Inorganic Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Physical and Theoretical Chemistry as well as Technical Chemistry, module can be selected in a volume of max. 30 CP. Each Division offers a research laboratory course with accompanying classroom activities (15 KP), a module with advanced lectures (9 CP) and a module with specialised lectures (6 CP). Some modules are offered in English.

The master thesis comprises 30 CP.
A semester abroad with 30 CP is recommended.

Reasons for Studying

If you are interested in chemistry and new materials, want to combine theoretical contemplation with practical experiments, enjoy technical discussions and place high value on close contact to professors and academic assistants, then you should definitely consider studying chemistry at the master's level in Oldenburg. The embedding of scientific research in chemistry at the University of Oldenburg in a culture of interdisciplinary discourse and socially responsible thinking is especially important to us. This is especially important to us. A semester abroad is recommended for students. The working group leaders can provide support in choosing institutes abroad.

The competencies particular sought after in the context of transformation to a sustainable energy system in electrochemistry, technical chemistry as well as in homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysis can be pursued on an advanced level in several research groups of the Institute. of Chemistry.

Foreign Language Skills

In order to study this course at the University of Oldenburg as a student from outside of Germany, you have to provide evidence of an adequate knowledge of German.

German Language Proficiency
You can proof your German language proficiency through the following language certificates:
  • DSH: Deutsche Sprachprüfung für den Hochschulzugang (Level 2)
  • TestDaF: Test – Deutsch als Fremdsprache (with level 4 in all four areas)
Recommended English Language Proficiency see admission requirements
  • Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) Level B2 is strongly recommended for studying.
You will need sufficient knowledge of English to be able to understand lectures and courses, write texts and conduct in-depth discussions in English.

The proof of language proficiency must be presented for the enrolment. For other proof possibilities see: Language requirements

Careers and Areas of Employment

The master's degree qualifies graduates to work responsibly as chemists in productive industries or in the service economy. This employment may include chemistry research, as well as assignments in service and advising in public or private institutions. Experience shows that graduates of the University of Oldenburg are highly valued in the labour market.

Target Group/Admission Requirements

Bachelor's degree or equivalent qualification in Chemistry or from prior studies in a closely related field.

Application/Admission Procedures

This is an open admissions degree course, and applications are accepted for both the winter and summer semesters.
The application deadline for the winter semester is 30 September.
The application deadline for the summer semester is 31 March.

Overview application deadlines Master's programmes

Please note
For open-admission Master's degree programmes it is strongly recommended to submit their applications as early as possible before 15 July for the winter semester and before 15 January for the summer semester. If the supporting documents are submitted after these dates but before the standard application deadlines, this may have disadvantages for the start of your studies.
