Overview

Overview of the PhD Study Programme "Neurosensory Science and Systems"

The programme offers a comprehensive training for young researchers doing their doctoral studies in the Neurosensory Sciences at the University of Oldenburg.

Core of the programme is an independent doctoral research project in one of the participating research groups. This is accompanied by a curriculum aiming at developing young academics into well-trained and independent members of the scientific community, but also prepares for other career options.

Curriculum

Successful completion of the curriculum demands at least 30 credit points (ECTS) allocated to the three main topics in the following way:

(A) Specialised scientific knowledge

In these courses PhD students broaden and deepen their scientific knowledge in the context of their field of research and acquire the necessary skills to perform high-quality laboratory work. Students also play an active role in colloquia, congresses and summer schools, and are encouraged to a research stay in a lab abroad (at least 12 credit points).

(B) Communicative competences

This part focusses on mastering communicative skills and presentation techniques in order to gather know-how in knowledge transfer (at least 6 credit points).

(C) Interdisciplinary competences / Transferable skills

In this context PhD students learn to develop strategies for their (scientific) career and acquire expertise in skills of general importance for professional development. This comprises courses on data management (statistics), project management, scientific writing, publishing own research results, writing proposals for grants and funding, as well as training for job application and taking part in a mentoring programme (at least 6 credit points).
