More than 60% of the total population of Germany lives in rural areas, yet medical facilities, shopping centers, cultural and recreational offerings, as well as job, training, and educational opportunities are primarily found in urban centers. This is giving rise to diverse mobility needs, which are not, or not sufficiently, addressed by public transport offers, especially since, in general, local public transport coverage of rural areas has been declining.

The interdisciplinary research project NEMo aims at the sustainable fulfillment of mobility needs in rural areas, and opts for a holistic view, considering social, demographic, accessibility, legal, economic, and ecological conditions and objectives. NEMo wants to facilitate the provision of novel mobility services based, for example, on social self-organization, and develop business models that increase utilization of private transport, while reducing the overall number of vehicles on the streets. Information technology is viewed as key enabler to support these objectives by means of software systems implementing a mobility platform that is accessible through various devices and media (web, mobile, automated hotlines, ticket kiosks, etc.) and addresses communication, announcement, notification, reservation, and compensation requirements regarding mobility needs and services of both providers and consumers. A cross section of this functionality is planned to be realized in prototypical manner as a major outcome of the overall project.

As one of the partners in the project consortium, the software engineering group is responsible for the (semi-automatic) mapping of business processes onto appropriate software components to support their execution, using service-oriented abstractions. Figure 1 depicts the different layers of the envisioned mobility platform: the top layer represents the problem domain with potential mobility services and the stakeholders providing or consuming them. Based on the needs found on this layer, business models and processes are derived to form the next layer. To bridge the semantic gap between business processes and software components (bottom layer), a service layer is introduced, that is free of technical implementation concerns and thus close to the problem domain, yet sufficiently rigorous and detailed to facilitate an automatic mapping onto concrete software components, and the derivation of coordination logic from service orchestrations.

The Sensei approach, a framework combining service-oriented, component-based, and model-driven concepts to support tool integration developed in the group, will be applied in this field, extending and generalizing it in the process. In particular, the NEMo project will be used as backdrop for researching, developing and applying novel means of expressing both required functionality, as well as non-functional constraints in terms of a service-based language close to the problem space, and subsequent automatic constraint resolution and coordination of appropriate service-implementing components by generating code targeting a suitable framework in the solution space.
